An intensive study plot to investigate chestnut tree reproduction

Abstract Key message Pollination is a key step for fruit production. To provide tool future in-depth analysis of pollination in chestnut, we describe detail chestnut orchard (location, genotype, phenotype and seed-set all trees). Context Chestnuts, which are insect-pollinated trees, have been massively planted around the world nut Orchards with clonal varieties selected from crosses between European chestnuts ( Castanea sativa ) Japanese C. crenata or Chinese mollissima because these two last species tolerant to blight ink diseases. Aims characterize genetic resources accurately model male female fitness as well pollen exchanges orchards, characterized INRAE germplasm collection located near Bordeaux (France). Methods All trees were geolocated genotyped using 79 SNP 98 SSR loci. We scored their flowering phenology BBCH scale precisely described (height, diameter breast height (DBH), canopy diameter…), capacity produce (flower type, catkins length…) production (number burrs, seed-set…). Results 275 273 them. identified 115 unique genotypes assigned each genotype species. assess phenology, evaluated 244 twice week, 6 weeks early June mid-July. also tree phenotypes 11 variables, 5 variables 3 variables. measures recorded 2018 except seed set that was measured consecutive years, 2019. Conclusion The data collected very detailed allows modelling trees. Parts this successfully published scientific articles.
